Canon PowerShot G9 X Review

Canon PowerShot G9 X

Canon PowerShot G9 X

Unlike the previous G5 X and G7 X which comes with 4.2x zoom lenses and a focal length range of 24-100mm and f/1.8-2.8 aperture maximum, the new G9 X comes with a 3x zoom lens with a focal length range of 28-84mm and f/2-4.9 maximum aperture.

It shows that the lens is not so versatile, but it is best for capturing framing flattering portraits and wide landscapes. The lower aperture means that it won't be easy to blur backgrounds areas and shutter speed will minimize in low light so you have to take extra care to avoid from auto blur. Thankfully the image stabilization system based on lens will help with this by offering a compensation of claimed 3EV.

Another core difference between previous G5 X and the G9 X is that the Canon G9 X does not come with viewfinder nor hotshoe to allow an external to be mounted. However, NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity is available so that you can send photos to your cloud storage or smartphone directly. You can also install Canon's application to make your smartphone a controller and remote viewfinder.

The Canon G9 X is much similar with G7 X but Canon has well managed to take it down around 25% and it's much similar in size with Canon S120, which comes with smaller 1.7/1-inch sensor. While this shrinking might impact negatively upon the specification of lens, but it doesn't seem to be impacted on the build quality of G9 X – it feels nice to control and is about the perfect size to fit into a jeans or shirt pocket.
Control-wise it is very straightforward and easily accessible controls. On the top there's a mode selection for managing the exposure mode, which provides a quick route to shutter priority, aperture priority, manual and program mode, with options to manage scene and fully automatic modes. There are just 4 buttons on the back side of the G9 X and the most of settings options are selected with the 3-inch 1,040,000-dot touch display, which provides very responsive and clear view. It's much easy to access the options that you want.

My first impressions on the G9 X are very nice; the lens focuses very speedily even in less light, colors pleasant and exposure seems accurate. As it comes with same processing engine and sensor as the Canon G7 X we can say confidently that the images will have a best level of noise and detail that's managed well. Naturally we will review it again about lens performance when we have a production sample.

While the Canon G9 X does not have an option of viewfinder, it puts together very attractively, small and nice and, it has a good size sensor. This and its connectivity make it an elegant option for professional photographers who appreciate the advantages of a camera they can take everywhere with them. With built-in Wi-Fi connectivity there should be very less delay among taking a picture and sharing.

We expect the level of noise will managed well as the processor and sensor are also same as the G7 X – and we are looking forward to finding how this mixture work well with the 28-84mm lens.
